Abstract


Factors influencing billet quality are reviewed with emphasis on composition, metal cleanliness and microstructure. Results of laboratory studies and experiences with billet in production operations are presented to highlight the effects of various metallurgical features on extrudability. Particular emphasis is placed on the mechanisms involved in enhancing or curtailing the performance of billet in the extrusion operation. Also, a comparison is made of the characteristics of float-cast and air-pressurized billet in terms of microstructure and relative extrusion performance. Finally some aspects of recent developments in Comalco's casting technology, in particular in the area of air-pressurized casting are discussed.
